According to reports, the bear was spotted early in the morning at Doklongia Deka village, which created panic among the local residents. Upon receiving information, the forest department of Jorhat informed the Bokakhat Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation Centre. Immediately, the centre’s trained rescue team along with veterinarian Dr. Mehdi Hasan proceeded to the site.
At the location, with the cooperation of forest staff of Jorhat forest division and rescue workers, Dr. Mehdi Hasan skillfully tranquilized the bear and transported it to the rehabilitation centre. The elderly bear, rescued from a fenced bamboo grove, was given primary treatment and kept under observation for some time. Later, it was successfully released into its natural habitat at Kathoni in the Agoratoli forest range of Kaziranga National Park, where bears are known to reside.
Divisional Forest Officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Arun Vighnesh, stated that apart from age-related weakness, the bear was completely healthy. Veterinarian Dr. Mehdi Hasan also confirmed that the bear showed no signs of injury, which is why the decision was taken to release it immediately.
